Pool Table Room Size Guide NZ — How Much Space Do You Need?

Viper green corner header

The number one mistake people make when buying a pool table is underestimating how much space they need. A pool table doesn’t just take up the footprint of the table itself — you need cue clearance on all four sides. Get this wrong and you’ll be using a short cue against the wall on every other shot.

This guide gives you the room dimensions you need for the pool tables we sell.

How to Calculate Pool Table Room Size

The rule is simple: take the table’s playing area and add about a cue’s length to each side. The cues that come with our tables are 57 inches (about 145cm) long.

Most players allow about 1.5m (150cm) on every side, plus a little extra so you can move around the table comfortably. The room sizes below are the ones we recommend on each table’s product page.

The Most Common Choice for NZ Homes — 8ft

The 8ft pool table is the size most of our range comes in. It fits in many double garages and large games rooms, and plays well for both casual and competitive games. Our Viper 8ft, Millstone 8ft, Boston slate, and Vegas slate tables are all available in 8ft.

What If My Room Is Slightly Too Small?

Use a shorter cue — Shorter cues (48″ or 52″) are made for tight spots. You’d keep a couple of short cues for the wall shots and use your regular cue for the open shots.

Go down a size — If your room is a little short of 5.7m x 4.5m, a 7ft table such as the Millstone 7ft (5.5m x 4.5m recommended) will play better than a cramped 8ft.

NZ Garage Sizes

Single garages are often around 3m wide, which is too narrow for full cue clearance on any of our tables, though you can make it work with short cues. Many double garages are around 6m x 6m, which gives full cue clearance for any of our 8ft tables. Garages vary a lot, so measure yours before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum room size for an 8ft pool table?
We recommend 5.7m x 4.5m for our 8ft tables, MDF or slate.

What size pool table fits in a double garage?
A double garage of about 6m x 6m comfortably fits any of our 8ft pool tables with full cue clearance. A Boston 9ft needs 6.2m x 4.6m, so it’s tight in a 6m garage.

Can I fit a pool table in a single garage?
It depends on the garage. Most single garages are borderline — you may need shorter cues for some shots. Measure first.

What’s the smallest pool table for home use?
A 7ft table is the smallest full-size option we recommend. Smaller tables don’t give you the full playing experience.
