A slate table costs three to four times what an MDF table does. So is it worth it? For a lot of homes, yes. For some, an MDF table is the smarter buy. Here is the honest difference, using the tables we sell.

What slate gets you
A truer roll that stays true. Slate is the material pool halls use because it is flat and stays flat. Once a slate table is levelled it holds its level, so the ball rolls where you hit it, year after year.
Weight that keeps it still. At 490 to 590kg, a slate table does not shift when someone leans on it or plays a hard break.
Better cushions and cloth. Our Boston and Vegas tables use Premier rubber cushions and PNS-900 cloth, so bank shots come off the cushion the way you expect.
A table for the long haul. When the cloth eventually wears, a slate table can be re-clothed and play like new. It is a piece of furniture you keep.
Where MDF makes more sense
Budget. A Viper or Millstone costs about a third of a slate table, with freight a fraction of the cost too, and it goes on Afterpay.
Kids and casual games. For family games and mates on a Friday night, an MDF table plays well and arrives ready to go in about half an hour.
Floors and moving. If the room is upstairs or on a suspended timber floor, or you might move house in a year or two, a 150kg table is far easier than a 550kg one. For a slate table on anything but a concrete slab, check with a builder first.
Damp garages. MDF does not like moisture. If your garage gets damp, keep a cover on any table, and think twice before leaving an MDF table in a cold, wet space.
So, is slate worth it?
If the table is going into a dedicated room on a solid floor and you will play for years, yes: slate plays better and lasts longer, and the difference shows every game. If it is for the kids, for a rental, or the budget is tight, an MDF table is the better buy, and you can still move up to slate later.
