If you’re shopping for a pool table in New Zealand, the options can feel overwhelming. What size? Slate or MDF? How much should you spend? We’ve been selling pool tables to Kiwis since 2018 and have shipped over 2,000 tables nationwide — so we know what works, what lasts, and what to avoid.
This guide covers everything you need to make the right choice.
Slate vs MDF Pool Tables — What’s the Difference?
The biggest decision you’ll make is the playing surface. Every pool table is either MDF (medium-density fibreboard) or slate — and the difference matters.
MDF pool tables are built on a wood composite base. They’re lighter, more affordable, and perfectly good for casual play. The Viper range — our best seller with over 2,000 sold in NZ — starts at $1,590 and is a fantastic option for the garage or games room. The trade-off is that MDF can absorb moisture over time and flex slightly, which can affect how your shots roll.
Slate pool tables use a natural stone playing surface. Slate doesn’t flex, doesn’t warp, and once it’s levelled it stays perfectly level for decades. If you want a table that plays like a pub or pool hall, slate is the right choice. Our Boston and Vegas slate pool tables start from $5,499 — a bigger investment, but a table that will outlast any MDF equivalent.
Our recommendation: If you’re setting up a mancave or games room and want a table you’ll still be playing on in 20 years, go slate. If you want a great game on a budget, go Viper MDF.

Best for: Mancaves with a premium setup, buyers who want style and performance.
What Size Pool Table Should I Buy?
8ft is the most popular choice for home use. It fits comfortably in most New Zealand garages and games rooms — you’ll need around 4.5m x 3.8m of floor space (including cue swing room of 1.5m on all sides).
9ft is tournament/pub standard. It plays differently — longer shots, more strategy. If you’ve played a lot of pool in bars and pubs and want that same experience at home, go 9ft. You’ll need around 5.2m x 4.4m.
When in doubt, go 8ft. It’s the right size for 90% of home setups.
